Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has been proven right sooner than perhaps even he might have expected after Enzo Maresca was fired by Chelsea.

The Italian was dismissed after an emergency meeting was held at Stamford Bridge over his future following a run of just one win in the last seven Premier League games.

“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the Club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track,” a statement from Chelsea said on Thursday. “We wish Enzo well for the future.”

Maresca’s future had come under considerable pressure following the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on Tuesday, with some of his recent comments raising questions about his position.

After a 2-0 win over Everton last month, Maresca described the build-up to the game as “the worst 48 hours” of his time in charge at Stamford Bridge, although he didn’t expand on what he meant by that.

Carragher offered his take shortly after during an appearance on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, and predicted that Maresca wouldn’t be in charge of Chelsea next season — a prediction that came true just over a couple of weeks later.

"Going forward, where can Maresca go that's better than Chelsea? I'm not sure," Carragher said.

"Now Chelsea as a club will feel, 'We can go and get another manager.' They could. Could they get someone better than Maresca? Maybe, but when you look at what's gone on at Spurs in the last couple of years, what's gone on at Manchester United in a couple of years, you can easily go and get a manager who is not at that level.

"Maresca can go up against any manager as he's proved. Whether it's Pep Guardiola, Arne Slot, Barcelona, Champions League. He's more than capable tactically and as a top coach."

Carragher added: "I don't think Maresca is manager of Chelsea next season. I think when you come out and speak on your ownership like that and you start going public, it's a big problem. I don't see him there next season."

Maresca’s dismissal leaves Chelsea searching for a new manager at a critical point in its season, with the Blues battling with Liverpool and Manchester United currently in the race for the top four.

The Reds missed the chance to take a five-point lead over their rivals after being held to a goalless draw by Leeds on New Year’s Day. Liverpool travels to Fulham next on Sunday, while Chelsea heads to Manchester City and United is at Leeds on the same day.
