Jamie Carragher was barred by Man City and 'warned' about 115 charges

1 hour ago 2

Jamie Carragher, a Liverpool legend and one of the most prominent soccer pundits in the United Kingdom, has had an illustrious career both on and off the pitch.

Known for his insightful commentary and unfiltered opinions, particularly regarding the Premier League rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester City, Carragher's voice is one that resonates within the soccer community.

Carragher's loyalty to Liverpool was unwavering throughout his playing career, making 737 appearances for the Merseyside team. His trophy cabinet boasts the UEFA Cup from 2001, the Champions League title from 2005, two FA Cups, and three League Cups, among other trophies, before he hung up his boots in 2013.

However, these days, he's just as renowned for his off-pitch commentary as he is for his on-pitch exploits. We delve into some recent instances where Carragher and Manchester City have crossed paths....

Manchester City away end ban

Carragher found himself barred from the away end at the Etihad when Manchester City played host to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last week.

The 47-year-old pundit, who previously sat with Dortmund fans at Signal Iduna Park during the German club's European semifinal clash against PSG in 2024, was denied entry by both UEFA and City.

UEFA reportedly deemed Carragher's press credentials insufficient for him to gain access to the away section. Meanwhile, the home club was said to be wary about allowing a former Liverpool player into that part of the stadium.

Carragher had 'no problem'

Following the Daily Mail's Mike Keegan posting an exclusive report about the incident on X, Carragher delivered his reply. "Just trying to have a good time with the Dortmund fans Mike, it was no problem it wasn't allowed," the former player replied.

"Next time message me & I'll tell you all you need to know, rather than Simon at Man City giving you a story. Probably explains why you're so sympathetic around the 115 charges."

'Warned' over 115 charges

City is confronting 115 charges of breaching financial regulations between 2009 and 2018. The club has denied all accusations, with a verdict anticipated imminently. Earlier this year, Carragher, Gary Neville, and fellow pundits received a caution from Sky Sports against making "snap judgements" when discussing the matter.

Carragher and colleagues were advised in correspondence that they ought to "stick to the facts" and permit themselves "sufficient time to digest the outcome" before offering commentary.

City display criticized

A month prior to the caution, Carragher condemned City supporters at the Etihad after some had displayed a banner ridiculing Real Madrid before a Champions League encounter.

"It's absolutely ridiculous," he told CBS Sports. "Why would you do that? Do it at the end of the game if you've beaten them and knocked them out. Why are you getting involved in that? I don't know what you get out of it."

He then cheekily posted on X: "Let's wind Real Madrid up, even though we've still got to go to the Bernabeu next week."
