Jeremie Frimpong has suggested Liverpool’s players “didn’t try hard enough” in their goalless draw with Leeds United.

The Reds began 2026 with a disappointing point at Anfield as they failed to capitalize on Chelsea and Manchester United dropping points earlier in the week.

Chances were few and far between for either side, with Virgil van Dijk perhaps going closest for the hosts as Dominic Calvert-Lewin saw a goal ruled out for offside. Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz had chances during the first half, with the former left incensed when he was denied a penalty after being held by Leeds defender Jaka Bijol as he made his way into the opposition box.

Liverpool though didn’t do enough to claim a three points which would have boosted its top four hopes, and Frimpong wasn’t too impressed with his own side’s performance.

“Frustrating - we wanted to win the game,” Frimpong told Sky Sports. “They defended well. At the end of the day, 0-0 very frustrating, but onto the next game.

“They defended really well. Obviously we tried, but we didn't try hard enough. We had a couple, I had a couple I think I should have delivered the ball better.

“Training, recover, we know what we can do. We have created a lot of chances. We need to go into the next game and do what we need to do but better.

“We know what we should do, we know the movements and we know the patterns.”

Liverpool doesn’t have much time to dwell on the result, with a meeting with Fulham awaiting on Sunday before it heads to Premier League leader Arsenal on January 8.

Reacting to his side’s draw, Reds boss Arne Slot told Sky Sports: "Different because last time we conceded in extra-time, but the end result of both games is a draw and that's a disappointment.

"Not the first time this season, from all the ball possession we have, we do generate chances, but I don't think it is enough or maybe it should be enough if you look at the xG, but we should be able to create more.

"We were very close with Virgil, but we didn't and this season multiple times we have conceded a goal in a game like this and that's a positive thing today.

"We kept a clean sheet and that's why we have a draw today."
