Jesse Marsch's comments about Liverpool players sums up Arne Slot's squad

7 hours ago 6

Former Red Bull Salzburg and Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch says two Liverpool players are among his favorites at the moment, with a Reds pair picked out for praise by the American.

Speaking to Goal, Marsch, who is now head coach of the Canadian national team, was asked to select players in a variety of categories, with the likes of Andres Iniesta, Thomas Muller and Xavi Hernandez also chosen by the 51-year-old.

The player he selected as one he would love to coach is Dominik Szoboszlai someone he did actually work with at Salzburg. His shout for the most underrated player in the world was Alexis Mac Allister.

This season, Szoboszlai has been superb. Liverpool's best player in the campaign to date, the Hungary captain has played a couple of different roles but has been excellent in each in the main.

"He's always been the player that I think he understands what a Liverpool player should look like," Slot said after Szoboszlai scored the winning goal against Arsenal at Anfield in August.

"If you wear this shirt, you should give everything no matter in what position you play. As a midfielder, he's always the first one to track back and to press high.

Dominik Szoboszlai misses a good chance for Liverpool in their win over Aston Villa, one of the few mistakes the outstanding midfielder made

"And today I don't think he did anything wrong. Unbelievable game from him in the position he probably paid only two or three times in his life so it tells you a lot about the mentality he has."

Likewise, Mac Allister is hugely talented. The Argentine missed much of the summer through injury, however, and has been playing catch-up since.

Mac Allister was very good against Aston Villa at the weekend, though, and will hope to be in the team against Real Madrid on Tuesday, just under a year after he scored against them in a 2-0 win for the Reds in last season's Champions League group phase.

"One thing that is clear is that he missed out on a lot, unfortunately," Slot told reporters before his side lost to Manchester United last month, when Mac Allister was struggling for form.

"He went out immediately after we won the league and we were expecting him to be back from the start of pre-season, which he wasn’t.

"That led to the fact that he wasn’t able to play three times in a row, so he went in, out, in, out, 60 minutes, 45 minutes. And that’s never an ideal scenario for a player.

"But like all the others he’s a player that has experienced so many things in his career already, so he will be back at the level he wants and the level I want from him."

With Ryan Gravenberch alongside them, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister make a formidable midfield trio, and there are the likes of Curtis Jones and Florian Wirtz to fit in there too. In time, Arne Slot will find a way to get the best out of all of them.
