Jordan Henderson weighs in on state of Liverpool after beating them with Brentford

Jordan Henderson said it's "a matter of time" until Liverpool finds its groove this season after helping to condemn his old team to a fourth successive Premier League defeat.

Henderson spent 12 years at Liverpool between 2011 and 2023, making nearly 500 appearances for the club, but was on the opposite side for the first time since leaving the Reds as Brentford won 3-2 in West London on Saturday.

Liverpool began the season with five successive league wins but has now lost four in a row, leaving the club in sixth position in the Premier League table.

Giving his verdict on his old side's struggles after the game, Henderson said: "You look all over the pitch, there's not much to go at, they're all quality players. I don't really see a weakness in the team.

"I know there's been results of late that haven't been great for them but, for me, they're still top players and a top, top team and it's a matter of time before they get in a rhythm and get going.

"I think there's been reasons why they haven't hit the heights from last season but they're still a world-class team and wherever you look on the pitch there's world-class players, so it's always going to be difficult but I thought the [Brentford] lads dug deep, stuck together and caused some problems on the counter."

Henderson's appearance in Brentford's win was the first the first time he had faced Liverpool since March 2011, when the Reds beat Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light courtesy of goals from Dirk Kuyt and Luis Suarez.

The 35-year-old England midfielder admitted it was slightly strange to face his old club, but that did not impact his commitment to Brentford's cause once the game kicked off.

"I think [it was] a little bit [strange] before because I've been at Liverpool for so long," Henderson said. "It's always deep inside us forever there, I'd been there so long.

"It was my life for 12 years. It was a little bit strange but having said that I knew when the whistle goes it was business as usual and I was focused and I'd be ready to go and I'd be in the right frame of mind, which I was."
