Jose Mourinho is poised for a triumphant return to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night as his Benfica side square off against his former club Chelsea in the Champions League. The Portuguese coach became a Chelsea icon, securing three Premier League titles, three League Cups and an FA Cup across two stints with the Blues between 2004 and 2007 and again from 2013 to 2015.
Mourinho has managed some of the world's most renowned teams, including Real Madrid and Inter Milan, and has captured league titles in four different countries during his career. After further spells in England with Manchester United and Tottenham, as well as tenures with Roma and Fenerbahce, Mourinho has now returned to where his managerial career began, re-joining Benfica earlier this month.
Mourinho's long list of major honours means that many are familiar with the 62-year-old's work in the dugout - but Mourinho tends to keep his personal life private. From his staggering net worth to his family, and an oft-forgotten arrest at Chelsea, here's everything you need to know.
Jose Mourinho's net worth
Having taken charge of some of the world's most prestigious clubs, it's hardly surprising that Mourinho has accumulated a substantial personal fortune during his 25 years as a top-tier manager. Remarkably, his net worth is estimated to be around the £100million mark.
Mourinho is claimed to have earned approximately £98m through his salaries in English football, but has also notably amassed millions from being sacked from various jobs over the years. He landed a huge £15m compensation deal when Spurs gave him his marching orders four years ago, while also pocketing significant payoffs after leaving United and Chelsea.
This month, reports indicated Mourinho was set to bank £30m over his two-year contract with Benfica. However, he has denied those suggestions, claiming he is actually "in the red" and has not taken the job for monetary reasons.
"If I had stayed at home until the end of the season, I would have earned more than I did at Benfica," he admitted after his return to the club. It's that simple. If I had enjoyed time with my family, stayed in London, brought them here, gone to the Algarve, and made a few trips, I would have earned more. I'm not even here for nothing; I'm in the red.
"And why? Because I really enjoy working. I missed playing for what Benfica is playing for: for the title. I couldn't do that in Rome, nor at Fenerbahce. It's a unique opportunity for me as a coach and as a person. Staying at home is not for me."
Mourinho has also increased his fortune through deals with leading brands, including Samsung, American Express, Braun, Jaguar, and Adidas, as well as occasional punditry work.
Jose Mourinho's family life
Mourinho has been married to his childhood sweetheart, Matilde 'Tami' Faria, for over thirty years. They tied the knot in 1989 after meeting in their hometown of Setubal. The pair have two children: daughter Matilde, born in 1996, and Jose Mario Jr., born in 2000.
While Tami tends to stay out of the public eye, Matilde has carved out a name for herself as a social media influencer with over 55,000 Instagram followers and has launched her own jewellery brand.
Jose Jr was once an aspiring goalkeeper who spent three years at Fulham, but he has seemingly swapped the pitch for the touchline as he follows in his father's coaching footsteps. He even offered his dad insights during Mourinho's time at United.
"In a period of a few bad results one day, he comes up with some analysis on my team – obviously suffering because dad wasn't doing well," Mourinho recalled. "We had lost to Watford and Manchester City, I think, and he came with the stats of the team. I showed them to my assistants, and I told them, 'Be careful as one day this boy will take one of your places.'"
However, it is Tami who has played a pivotal role in her husband's career, and was partly responsible for his decision to turn down the opportunity to manage England in 2007. During his first spell at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho was strongly tipped to replace Steve McClaren as England manager before his wife offered advice.
"My players said, 'The guys from Manchester United and Liverpool call us and say to us: Tell your boss to come.' I had lots of positive things to push me," he explained.
"My wife told me not to take it, and she was right. It was the right decision. We are talking about seven years ago... and I cannot wait two years for a big competition. I cannot be spending two years playing against Kazakhstan and San Marino."
Surprise arrest at Chelsea
'The Special One' has consistently courted controversy throughout his managerial career, but Mourinho actually found himself arrested during his first Chelsea spell, following a dispute with officers concerning his cherished dog.
Mourinho was detained by authorities in May 2007 after a visit from an animal health official and two police constables to his London home to remove his Yorkshire terrier from the property. Reports indicated the inspector wanted to place the dog in quarantine, suspecting it had travelled abroad and returned to England without the correct vaccinations.
When Mourinho refused to hand over the animal, he was apprehended and cautioned for obstructing officers. The incident was subsequently described as a "misunderstanding" by his spokesperson following his release without any charges.
"Jose Mourinho can confirm that he was cautioned by police, and released without charge earlier this morning after an incident involving his pet dog," the spokesperson said at the time. "The incident occurred due to a misunderstanding over documents required for veterinary regulations.
"Mr Mourinho would like to make it clear that his pet dog was bought in England from a reputable breeder and has had all its necessary inoculations. Full cooperation will be given to the authorities over any animal health issues."
Astonishingly, Mourinho's arrest occurred days before he steered Chelsea to FA Cup glory, with his side beating United 1-0 in the final after extra time.
Reflecting on the bizarre episode during a conversation with Gary Lineker in 2015, he said: "I won the FA Cup but it was a complicated week for me because I was in jail because of my dog.
"It's an odd story, the vet thought I was taking the dog from Portugal in a private plane and without the legal situation. They sent the police to my house to take the dog, but I didn't let them take the dog. So, because they didn't take the dog they took me for obstruction to justice.
"It was a difficult week - I was in that final but my family was not there because they had to stay in Portugal with the dog, for the dog not to go to jail."
