Massimiliano Allegri has made his thoughts very clear in the talks with the AC Milan management regarding a defensive reinforcement.
Albeit back to full strength now, if we exclude Fikayo Tomori’s one-game suspension, Milan’s lack of depth at the back was truly showcased when Matteo Gabbia got injured. The Italian is the leader at the back and his absence was felt, especially since Koni De Winter struggled a bit.
As such, it has been made very clear to Milan what could happen if one of the centre-backs were to get injured, or in a worst-case scenario, two of them. Work has thus been ongoing to identify a player who could arrive to reinforce the squad this month.
Centre-back identikit obvious
Monica Colombo, who follows Milan as a correspondent Corriere della Sera, was interviewed by Radio Rossoneri (via MilanNews) and among other things, she shared her thoughts on the centre-back position. Based on her words, Allegri have made clear requests.
“What does Max need to take this team to the next level? I think he expects a defender. In my opinion, also based on his behaviour when he was in Turin, he doesn’t just want a player to improve the numerical situation.

“Instead, he wants a player who can raise the bar and truly add depth. I think back to the old disputes with Giuntoli when he was at Juventus. He was competing with Inter for the Scudetto and he asked for quality reinforcements, but youngsters arrived.
“That was one of the points of contention with the sporting director at the time. And in the end, those signings didn’t prove effective in strengthening the team. I believe that, similarly, he’s aiming for an experienced defender, a Gatti-style one, not a young player to insert slowly,” she stated.
