Jurgen Klopp notices 'risk' in Arne Slot tactics as Liverpool's winning run ends

2 hours ago 2

Jurgen Klopp has sparked a debate about whether Liverpool has become overly offensive under the leadership of Arne Slot.

The ex-Reds boss suggests that a more defensive strategy might be necessary moving forward. Klopp left Liverpool in the summer of 2024 after an extraordinarily successful nine-year stint at Anfield. He managed 491 matches and bagged seven major trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League.

Slot, who previously managed Feyenoord, took over from Klopp last season and surpassed expectations in his inaugural season on Merseyside, securing the top-flight title with a comfortable 10-point lead. Although Liverpool has started its title defence strongly, winning five out of its first six games, the performances haven't been as impressive as the results indicate.

Indeed, the Reds had to depend on late goals to clinch victories against Bournemouth, Newcastle, Arsenal, and Burnley, before narrowly defeating Everton in a tightly contested Merseyside derby.

Liverpool then experienced its first loss of the season against Crystal Palace, who scored a last-minute winner to secure a 2-1 victory on Saturday.

In truth, the Eagles were the better team at Selhurst Park.

At times, Liverpool have seemed somewhat too exposed, and Klopp pointed out this issue in an interview with The Athletic.

He stated: "Liverpool is playing a specific (style), so really, really good. Very offensive oriented.

"Do they take the risk of being exposed a little bit? Different ways to go, let me say it like that."

Jamie Carragher highlighted Liverpool's overly aggressive tactics following the team's opening weekend triumph over Bournemouth, criticizing the defensive lapse that led to Antoine Semenyo's second goal.

The Cherries' striker was allowed to sprint at least 70 yards before slotting the ball into the corner.

"It is unbelievable," Carragher told Sky Sports. "It's fantastic from Semenyo - but Liverpool have had this problem.

"How many players were ahead of the ball - maybe eight players - when they were winning 2-1? That can't happen. It's absolutely shocking at this level.

"For Semenyo to run that far and get his shot away is incredible - but where is (Ibrahima) Konate going? He had a really, really poor night tonight at center-back."
