Rafael Leao will be at the centre of Massimiliano Allegri’s plans for AC Milan, but there are multiple factors behind the decision to keep him.

Over the past few weeks, Leao’s name has been linked with several prestigious teams, including Bayern Munich. Yet, the Portuguese will wear the No.10 shirt for the Rossoneri next season too, which will officially begin tomorrow at Milanello with the first day of training.

Why Leao will stay

La Verità (via MilanNews) wrote this morning that Leao’s permanence at Milan certainly has tactical motivations, but also economic ones.

According to the documents seen by the newspaper, the resale clause in favour of Lille is still active after being renegotiated. More specifically, Milan could be forced to pay up to €14.8m to Les Dogues. With this resale clause to Milan it is convenient to sell Leao only above €100m.

So, how does it work? If the Rossoneri were to let go of the Portuguese for €45m or less, Lille would not be entitled to anything, but things change when the figures increase. In a sum between €46- 51m, Milan would pay a maximum of €5m to Leao’s old club.

For the remaining part 20% up to a maximum of €100m. Example: if Leao were to move for €80m, Lille would receive €10.8m, which is €5m plus 20% of €29m net.

These are the terms of the new sell-on fee, which in light of these calculations is much more convenient for Milan the more the player’s value exceeds €100m, also because the agreement signed in 2023 specifies that nothing will be owed to Lille on the excess amount.
