Last time Milan faced Bari: cheeky free-kick, red card and Cassano goal

2 days ago 9

AC Milan and Bari will be up against each other for the first time in over 14 years tomorrow, with the most recent clash dating back to March 2011. It’s a game that ended 1-1 and included quite a lot.

As Milan finished in 8th place this past season, they failed to avoid the Coppa Italia preliminaries, starting their season one week earlier than their rivals. Bari will be the first hurdle to overcome in their pursuit of a Round-of-16 ticket, and that game is scheduled for tomorrow.

Max Allegri is serving a suspension and will thus miss the first competitive clash of the 2025-26, though he will of course be in the stands to watch. He will also keep in contact with his staff during the game, as you would expect.

An unexpected 1-1 draw

As said at the start, tomorrow’s game will be the first encounter between these two teams in over 14 years. Back then, Milan were sitting at the top of the table (they went on to win the Scudetto) and although the game was seen as an easy win, it ended in a 1-1 draw.

Bari took the lead in the first half after a cheeky free-kick routine, catching the defence off guard, and Milan then pushed everything they had forward. After an offside goal by Robinho, and a handball goal by Ibrahimovic, things were looking tough.

It got even worse when Ibrahimovic was shown a straight red card for hitting an opponent. Thankfully, the substitute and Bari-raised player Antonio Cassano found the back of the net to make it 1-1. Milan then had a few good chances to win the game, but were denied.
