AC Milan kicked off their 2025-26 campaign by beating Bari in the Coppa Italia, booking their place in the last 16 of the competition.
Rafael Leao broke the deadlock in the first half, heading home emphatically from a Fikayo Tomori cross before then being forced off with what looked like a calf muscle issue. However, thankfully some positive news has come out about his condition.
Christian Pulisic doubled the advantage in the second half, finishing off a feed from Santiago Gimenez to effectively kill off the tie. Milan could have scored more but had to settle for two goals ahead of the Serie A opener in a few days. Below are the best stats from the game.
Domination
Perhaps it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise given the Serie B opponent, but Milan having 65% possession and almost 2xG showed how on top they were. That said, there were only two ‘big chances’.
The Rossoneri had 24 total shots, of which only five were on target. They also had 12 corners but failed to make any of them count, so the wastefulness is certainly an area to address.
Rafa, Puli and Fik
Milan have won five of their last six debut matches of the season in all competitions (D1), scoring 13 goals in the process (2.2 on average).
Of Rafael Leão’s 71 goals for Milan in all competitions, this was only his fourth headed finish; he previously scored with a header on 8 February 2025 against Empoli in Serie A.
Since he joined Milan in 2023-24, Pulisic is the only Serie A player with at least 30 goals and 20 assists in all competitions (33 goals + 20 assists).
Since he joined Milan (from 2023-24), Christian Pulisic has scored 33 goals in all competitions, at least five more than any other AC Milan player (Rafael Leão is second with 28).
Leão scored in his first appearance of the season for the first time in career for Milan across all competitions (his seventh season for the Rossoneri).
Fikayo Tomori provided his fourth assist for Milan in all competitions. What is interesting though is that three of these have arrived in the calendar year 2025.
