Leao dedicates match-winning brace and praises Modric after ‘great team effort’

Rafael Leao dedicated his game-winning brace to his family and his team-mates after AC Milan came back to beat Fiorentina.

Going into the game, Milan knew that they would retake top spot with a win at home against a Fiorentina side that have gone six without a victory to begin the Serie A season. However, various things made it a bumpy ride.

Firstly, there were the injury issues afflicting Massimiliano Allegri’s squad: Ardon Jashari, Christian Pulisic, Adrien Rabiot, Christopher Nkunku, Pervis Estupinan and Ruben Loftus-Cheek were all forced to watch from the stands due to various issues.

Then, there was the fact that Fiorentina put in a very gutsy and resilient performance, even taking the lead in the second half through Robin Gosens. Yet, it was a case of cometh the hour cometh the man, as Leao scored twice – including a late penalty – to engineer a comeback win.

‘A great team effort’

The match-winner – who was officially crowned the Player of the Match by Lega Serie A – spoke to DAZN after the full-time whistle, and his words are via MilanNews.

You scored twice, and sent Milan top!

“We knew it was going to be a tough match. Fiorentina are going through a tough period, but they have quality players. The coach told us we couldn’t give them any space, especially Kean, who’s a great striker.

“That’s what we did today, a great team effort, even though the first half was a bit of a strange game. In the end, we got going.”

Modric praised you…

“When he arrived at Milanello, he gave me a hug and told me he wanted to help me. Playing with these players helps you grow, I’m very happy: he’ll give me lots of assists to take Milan forward.”

A dedication after your goals?

“I spent a month and a half injured: I dedicate it to my family and my team-mates, who helped me and kept me in a great mood when I returned. I’m very happy. We have to keep going like this.”
