Rafael Leao has given an update on his injury, while picking up a trophy at the Gentleman Fair Play Award event tonight.

Leao was present at tonight’s Gentleman Fair Play Award event in Milan and he spoke briefly while on stage, with his comments relayed by TMW.

“Obviously it’s a significant award; last season didn’t go well for us, but I’m happy with the trophy. Injury? We’re working to get back as soon as possible, but it’s an injury we can’t take risks with.

“As for me, a centre-forward? I know that position well, the coach has great experience, and I’m available to play as a striker or winger.”

The current status

Leao has been out since August 17th when he suffered a calf strain against Bari in the Coppa Italia and he is yet to return to fill training. The Portuguese player is also at high risk of missing Sunday’s game against Bologna, the first after the international break.

He was expected to return to the squad this week, but caution is needed. After missing the first two league matches against Cremonese and Lecce in hopes of recovering for their return from the international break, he turned down a call-up to the Portugal squad.

Leao’s calf problem doesn’t appear to have been resolved yet, with Allegri also likely to be without him for the match against Rossoblu. At best, he will take a place on the bench.
