Leao’s positive form and avoidable goals: All the key stats from AC Milan vs. Pisa

AC Milan only got one point in their game against Pisa on Friday evening, despite Rafael Leao opening the scoring, and there were both positives and negatives to take for Massimiliano Allegri.

As highlighted by the manager in his post-match interview, Milan mainly have themselves to blame for the final result. They dominated the game in the first half and should have scored more than one goal, while the goals conceded certainly were avoidable.

Chances squandered

Taking a look at the general stats from the game, it’s clear that Milan should have come away with more. Pisa’s xG is high thanks to the penalty received, but aside from that, they didn’t really create many dangerous chances.

Milan, on the other hand, had several good opportunties to find the back of the net again. Alexis Saelemaekers missed a great one in the dying seconds, for example, while Leao hit the bar when the scores were still 1-1.

Milan-Pisa stats

Unbeaten run

One of the positives from last night’s draw was that Milan at least extended their unbeaten run. It’s the first time they have gone seven games unbeaten in the league since April 2024, when Stefano Pioli was in charge of the team.

As also highlighted by Allegri in the aforementioned interview, while the draw is disappointing in the moment, it could prove to be a vital point down the line. The fact that Milan managed to fight their way back into the game, as such, was nice to see.

Leao scores again

After finding the back of the net against Fiorentina, breaking a long drought in Serie A at San Siro, Leao scored once again last night with a smart finish. It’s the first time he has scored in consecutive home games since May 2024 (then against Cagliari and Salernitana).

Furthermore, Leao’s goal tally has now reached four goals despite making just five appearances this season (due to the injury). His average is a goal every 61 minutes, which is better than in any of his Milan seasons so far.

It should also be noted that Zachary Athekame, who scored the equaliser, became the youngest foreigner to score for the Rossoneri in the league since Chaka Traore, who scored against Empoli in January 2024.

Avoidable goals

Finally, the goals that Milan conceded were certainly avoidable. The penalty was quite unlucky as Koni De Winter didn’t even really see the shot coming, handing off his marking at the time. The second goal, meanwhile, was very strange overall with poor defending.

However, what’s even more worrying is that out of the six goals conceded so far this season, five of them came against Cremonese, Fiorentina and Pisa. Clearly, Milan have a tendency to switch off against sides that have struggled.
