Leao sheds light on ‘mental challenge’ of playing with discomfort: “I’ll be back to 100% soon”

Rafael Leao has admitted that he isn’t physically at his best, describing it as a ‘mental challenge’ each time he takes to the field.

Leao will once again have the job of leading the line for AC Milan in the six-pointer against Roma in the capital tonight. Perhaps surprisingly, Massimiliano Allegri has opted to field Christopher Nkunku alongside him rather than Christian Pulisic.

It seems the Portuguese will once again be the one playing the number nine role, something that he has already done several times this season. Leao was also at Milanello on a day off during the week, showing his determination to shake off some adductor irritation.

Leao spoke to DAZN just under one hour before kick-off in the big game at the Stadio Olimpico and he spoke about the physical battle he is fighting, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

Do you enjoy playing, even if it’s a little uncomfortable?

“It’s a mental challenge. I’ve changed my methods and I’m in a different position on the pitch. This challenge has helped me grow as a player, to read the plays.

“I’ve also been more decisive with the injury. We’re managing it well, the staff and everyone is working really well. I’ll be back to 100% soon.”

Are you thinking about the risk of letting Inter escape?

“We’re making our own path. I know there are a lot of people out there who don’t believe us. This year, we have a great team, a great coach, and a great manager.

“You can see from the standings that we’ve changed a lot. We have to look at ourselves, and today is a great challenge to show who we are.”
