Leon Goretzka, surprise deal and three players Tottenham can sign for free in January

Tottenham could use the January transfer window to sign some world class talent for nothing

Tottenham are likely to be busy in the January transfer window. Thomas Frank has said so himself.

"We will definitely be in the market, no doubt about that," said the Dane earlier this month. "We want them as early as possible, like every other time and let's see if we can have them before the 31st of January."

The winter window is not just for signing players for the here and now, though. Premier League clubs can have talks with players in foreign leagues whose contracts are up in the summer, to come to a pre-contract agreement with them over a free transfer in the summer.

Tottenham could use this to their advantage as there are a number of players who can be signed for nothing ahead of next summer.

Here are three such players that may interest Tottenham in January...

Ruben Neves

Neves left Wolves for Al Hilal in 2023 but his contract at the Saudi Arabian club is set to expire next summer. The 28-year-old captained Wolves to promotion to the Premier League in 2018 and played more than 250 times for the Molineux club in six years so has plenty of experience. Al Hilal paid a reported £47million for the midfielder so getting him for nothing would be a real coup for the Lilywhites. He is likely to have plenty of options, though, and Spurs may even choose to try and buy the Portuguese star in January in a cut-price deal.

Dusan Vlahovic

The Serbian could potentially be a surprise pick. Vlahovic is said to have no intention of renewing his contract at Juventus and that means he is set to leave the Bianconeri club next summer. The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to the Premier League before, most notably Arsenal in 2021, and would add to Frank's options of Dominic Solanke and Richarlison. The striker has scored six goals in 17 appearances for the Italian giants this season and given Fabio Paratici's links, a deal certainly seems possible.

Leon Goretzka

This would be a real statement. The Germany international has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in recent weeks, with the midfielder seemingly content at the minute to walk away from the Bundesliga champions. At 30 years old and with nearly 300 appearances for Bayern, Goretzka would add real quality to the Spurs squad as well as a winning mentality.
