Liam Rosenior accepts clear Chelsea sack reality as brutally honest admission made

Liam Rosenior conducted his first Chelsea press conference on Friday afternoon where the newly-appointed head coach spoke about his move from Strasbourg this week

Liam Rosenior has accepted the pressure is on him to deliver not only in the long-term as Chelsea head coach, but also for the remainder of the season.

The 41-year-old was confirmed as Enzo Maresca's successor earlier in the week and will make his debut in the dugout for the Blues on Saturday evening in the FA Cup third round against Charlton Athletic. While Rosenior is eager to get his style, ideology and way of thinking across to his players as soon as possible, a hectic January schedule - where Chelsea play another play another seven matches across all four competitions between now and the end of the month - means the head coach will not have much time on the training ground with the squad.

That is so often the case when managers come into a club midway through a season. Rosenior accepted that is "not ideal" but insisted he will be judged on what happens between now and the end of the campaign, and not next season when he would have had a full summer to work with his players.

"[That's] impossible here. It's impossible for me to be judged [from] next season," Rosenior replied to football.london's question on Friday afternoon. "It's not ideal.

"Every coach would love to come in over the summer, be able to sit for six weeks in the sun, develop your philosophy, learn about players - but that's not the reality. I'm very fortunate, I think the team is very well coached already and have a very strong identity in the way they want to play, that is clear.

"I understand that I have similarities in the way that I want the team to play as well, which will help the translation process from one coach to another. But I am not going to make excuses. I'm here because Chelsea is expected to win - rightfully so - every game that they play and you have seen with managers in this league and in other leagues in Europe, if you don’t then you are in trouble.

"I need to manage to win in the short-term but also I need to have an eye on the long-term as well so we can be successful over that period."

While the pressure is on Rosenior, he is convinced he will succeed in BlueCo's project having already experienced what it is like to work with the senior officials at the consortium: "If I didn't believe that I could be successful here, I honestly wouldn't have taken the job. It wouldn't have been fair to the supporters, it wouldn't have been fair to the players.

"I have a very good relationship with the guys [sporting directors/Chelsea hierarchy]. I understand what they want, I understand where they want to get to, I understand how they want to get there.

"I think that helps me to deliver what they want. That is why I am here. I believe we can be successful. It is not just about me and we will see in time if that is proven right."
