Liam Rosenior is set to make wholesale changes to his Chelsea line-up for Wednesday evening's Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge
Liam Rosenior will take charge of his first home match as Chelsea head coach on Wednesday night and in terms of challenges, they do not get much more difficult at the moment than Arsenal. The Premier League leaders, who are still going in all four competitions this season, make the short trip to Stamford Bridge later this week with Rosenior hoping for a dream debut in the dugout in SW6.
Rosenior made an ideal start to life as Chelsea head coach with Saturday night's win at Charlton Athletic, a game in which he made eight changes from the defeat at Fulham. The 41-year-old, who was appointed as the Blues' new first-team boss last week, is set to make wholesale changes to the XI once again, with a much stronger line-up expected given the nature of the game and opposition.
Robert Sanchez could return in goal for the west Londoners. Filip Jorgensen did well on Saturday but given it is now the semi-final of the Carabao Cup, Sanchez could come back in for the Dane.
In defence, Josh Acheampong could drop out of the side with Malo Gusto taking his place at right-back. That is very much fitness-dependant, with Rosenior confirming on Monday that Gusto will face a late test to see if he is available for the visit of the Gunners.
Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah were the first-choice central defensive pairing under Enzo Maresca and it will be interesting to see if Rosenior has the same vision. Marc Cucurella is available again after serving his one-match suspension in Charlton, with Jorrel Hato, who performed admirably at the weekend, unlucky to drop to the bench.
Moises Caicedo is suspended for this one. The Ecuador international picked up his second yellow card of the competition last time out at Cardiff City and will be unavailable for Wednesday's game at Stamford Bridge. Enzo Fernandez could return to the XI in Caicedo's place alongside Andrey Santos, possibly the only survivor of the win over the Addicks.
Estevao Willian was mightily impressive when coming on against Charlton. The Brazil international would be a popular inclusion in the starting XI in a game where Chelsea might rely on a special talent like him to produce a moment of magic against a solid Arsenal defence.
It is very much up in the air in terms of if we see Cole Palmer at Stamford Bridge. The 23-year-old picked up a knock, like the aforementioned Gusto, at Fulham a week ago and is facing a late fitness test for this week's Carabao Cup semi. Facundo Buonanotte started in the No.10 role at The Valley but the Argentine is set to drop out of the side.
Pedro Neto could be given a go on the left-hand side of Chelsea's attacking line to accommodate others. Joao Pedro might be given the nod to be the sole No.9 for the Blues, though Liam Delap's recent form means the Brazilian is being pushed hard for a starting spot.
Possible Chelsea line-up: Sanchez; Gusto, Fofana, Chalobah, Cucurella; Santos, Fernandez; Estevao, Palmer, Neto; Joao Pedro
