Mattia Liberali has admitted that he does not feel any regrets about deciding to leave AC Milan, even though it is a ‘second home’.
The Italy U20 team have topped their group with Australia, Cuba and Argentina at the World Cup in Cuba, and they are now preparing to face the United States in a crucial quarter-final match. Among the key players is Liberali, who left Milan for Catanzaro in the summer.
In one of our latest Substack long reads, we dissected the formula of the move and what it means for Milan. In essence, though, the Rossoneri were more or less forced to accept the solution due to difficulties in renewing the teenager’s contract, and a lack of leverage.
‘Those were wonderful years’
Perhaps the paths will cross again down the line, especially with Milan having effectively secured a 50% discount clause. In the meantime, Liberali spoke to Cronache di Spogliatoio about his move and why he decided to do it, with his comments relayed by Radio Rossonera.

You made your debut at San Siro on AC Milan’s 125th anniversary?
“It was one of the best days of my life, if not the best. I tried to live it all to the fullest and enjoy every moment. The fans even chanted for me during the warm-up. It was beautiful; it took me a few days to realise it all.”
Why did you leave?
“It’s a second home for me. I have a deep affection for it because I arrived there as a child and had wonderful experiences as a Rossoneri player. I have no regrets, though. Those were wonderful years, and I thought a new challenge was worthwhile.”
What is your relationship with Camarda like?
“He’s like a brother to me; we have a wonderful relationship. We’ve played together since we were kids. We get along really well on the pitch, partly because I like to provide assists and he likes to score goals.”
