‘Limiting to just say passion’ – Albertini offers reminder about Modric’s quality ahead of derby

Luka Modric could be decisive in the Derby della Madonnina this weekend, and AC Milan will hope that he can be.

Having someone like Modric in your squad for the derby is already a massive plus, and that is without considering the fact that he will probably start that game. The Croatian has played in some of the biggest matches in the football calendar.

Numerous Champions League finals, a World Cup final, and several other derbies, which are each intense in their own right. Modric has experience at the top level, and that is what could be the key for the Rossoneri this weekend.

Modric and the derby

Milan will go into the game with confidence, given they have a phenomenal record against the ‘top’ sides in the division – which could be handy later in the season – whilst Inter will want to keep their top spot.

Ahead of the game, Demetrio Albertini spoke to the media at the 2025 AIC Football Grand Gala, and his words have been relayed by MilanPress.

“It’s limiting to say [it’s] just passion, but it’s Modric’s quality that is dictating the team’s pace today. I’m happy for Milan. Ultimately, he’s playing one game a week this year and can recover. As the years go by, you can be a phenomenon, but in the end, they make themselves felt.

“Having him in our league and at Milan is a great pleasure to be able to see him every Sunday.”

The derby…

“For me, they can fight for the Scudetto until the end. In fact, they must do so because that would provide the basis for understanding what could be missing if they don’t achieve it. Objectively, Milan is obliged to always think big

“I expect a good derby, interesting all week. I hope it’s a good match on Sunday. It’s a match where perhaps there’s no clear favourite because both teams started well.

“Personally, I thought Inter might have a bit more of a setback, given last year’s performance, but instead, they’ve started very well with their coach, who is doing very well. Milan has found a balance that I hope to see now in the derby, which for me is a game unlike any other.”
