Liverpool has paid its latest tribute to Diogo Jota. He has been mourned all across the sport and beyond since his tragic passing earlier this month, with the club now taking its latest step to immortalize the beloved forward.
Jota, who died in a car accident along with his brother Andre, has had his number 20 jersey retired by the club. And that change has now been reflected on the official website in a classy manner.
The list of the current first team is kept up to date — it already features the likes of Florian Wirtz (even though the German and other new additions are yet to be assigned permanent squad numbers). Jota has understandably been removed from the list of forwards, but he is recognized elsewhere on the page.
Scrolling beyond goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, forwards and on-loan players, a new section has been created. It is labeled "forever".
Jota is the only one listed in this category, alongside the number 20 that will now permanently belong to him. That links to a profile of the striker.
"Diogo Jota is immortalised as Liverpool Football Club's number 20 forever," that profile reads. "The much-loved forward tragically died at the age of just 28 in a road traffic accident in July 2025, five years into a Reds career that was packed with special moments.
"Amid the huge outpouring of love for Jota, who passed away alongside his brother Andre Silva in the tragedy, the club confirmed the retirement of his jersey across all of its teams and for eternity."
This also applies to the women's and youth teams. Jota will be the last to don the number 20 for Liverpool across all levels.
This gesture, and the corresponding addition to the website, are the latest in a series of tributes designed to honor Diogo and his brother Andre. They have extended far beyond Merseyside.
Jota will be honored next month at a friendly between Atletico Madrid and Porto. He represented both clubs, although he never featured competitively for the Spanish side.
He has also been inducted into the Wolves Hall of Fame. He becomes just the 38th entrant, and the first addition in more than two years.
Elsewhere, Chelsea winger Pedro Neto dedicated his Club World Cup win to Jota, with whom he played at Wolves and at international level. "This one's for you, partner D", he wrote on social media.
Meanwhile, players from around the world have been honoring Jota with some of his trademark goal celebrations. Darwin Nunez became the latest to do so after he scored against Preston, Liverpool's first game since the tragedy.
It is still strange to see preseason happening as usual, the normality at odds with the shock and tragedy of what has happened. Diogo and Andre's death has reminded everyone of what really matters — they are both sorely missed, with the tributes a testament to their respective legacies.
