Liverpool cult hero issues uncomfortable truth to Arne Slot after Man City loss

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy dismissed Liverpool's title chances following Sunday's defeat by Manchester City.

The Reds were second best throughout the encounter at the Etihad Stadium, as goals from Erling Haaland, Nico Gonzalez and Jeremy Doku secured a 3-0 win for Pep Guardiola's side.

It is City that looks like the team most likely to challenge Arsenal for the title, with Liverpool now down in eighth place after losing five of its last six league games.

Murphy was asked whether Liverpool's title hopes are over, and he responded: “Not from a points tally, but from a performance level - yes. They’re not playing well enough, they don’t look like they’re playing well enough to make up the gap, unfortunately.

“Away from home, they’re too easy to play against, too wide open, making too many mistakes.”

Liverpool began the season with five successive league victories, but has picked up just three points from 18 available in the six league games since.

The Reds looked to be returning to some kind of form with wins over Aston Villa and Real Madrid leading into the game against City, but Slot's men were clearly second best throughout the clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Slot was asked about Liverpool's title chances following the loss to City, but was not willing to entertain title talk after watching his side lose again

Danny Murphy addressed Liverpool's struggles

"Yes, it feels too many [losses] and the last thing I should speak about now is the title race," Slot said. "We should first focus on getting results — result after result after result — before we can even think about that and the reality is that we are eighth now.

"One team is quite far ahead, although City are four points away from Arsenal. The rest is quite close and I said last season many times, even when we were leading in the beginning, the best way to judge the league table is of course after 38 [games] but the next best thing is to judge it after 19 games because then you’ve all faced the same opponents.

"And our first focus should be on getting results and the last thing we should focus on is the title race, which is something we could do last season but also not the previous two seasons before. But we need to improve and that’s obvious."
