Liverpool discovers Morgan Rogers release clause as contract reality emerges

1 hour ago 1

Morgan Rogers' new contract with Aston Villa has sparked speculation about a potential release clause.

The forward has committed to the club until 2031, signing his third Villa contract in less than two years, amid transfer rumors linking him with Premier League teams Chelsea and Liverpool. Rogers has become one of the most sought-after players in English soccer after scoring 14 goals and providing 16 assists for Villa last season, helping him become an England international.

Former Villa CEO Keith Wyness believes the contract will include release clauses related not only to a transfer fee for the 23-year-old England international, but also specific clubs.

"To get this done, there would've had to have been some sort of release clause. I think it may be for specific clubs as well," Wyness told Football Insider.

"These release clauses are becoming quite complex. It used to be quite simple. You'd agree on a number, and that was it.

"But now there are all sorts of clauses and specifics that are coming into them, and I think with Rogers, it'll probably be a list of three or four clubs that he can go to for a certain price.

"Now, what that does for Villa is that it increases his valuation. Villa will get the full price for him, which is important because he's one of their most important assets, and he's performing very well for them.

"I think he could well become a bit of a star after the World Cup."

Villa confirmed Rogers' new contract earlier this week. Rogers told Villa's website: "I’m so happy. The faith from the people at the club is a really nice feeling, and I couldn’t wait to sign. I’m really happy."

Rogers is from the town of Halesowen, located just down the road from Villa Park. On playing for Villa, he added: "It’s home. Being from the area makes it that bit sweeter, but the manager, the players, the staff, everyone here is so warm and welcoming every day.

"I’m excited to come in and train, work hard, and give my all every day. I really enjoy it. The most important thing for me is enjoying my football and being able to express myself. There’s no reason why I wouldn’t want to stay here."

On Unai Emery's influence, Rogers continued: "It’s everything.

"Especially with the things I’ve been through in the past with different teams, when you get a manager who’s so on your side and who wants to help and improve you, that really good relationship is very nice.

"For it to be a manager who’s so highly thought of in the game is really nice. I have a really good relationship with him, and I can’t wait to keep working with him and keep progressing together."
