Liverpool supporters have voiced their frustration and called for reinforcements after a costly mistake by Ibrahima Konate in the Reds defeat to Brentford in the Premier League.
Mikkel Damsgaard, positioned 15 yards inside his own half, split Liverpool’s defense with a beautifully curled pass around Konaté, setting Kevin Schade free on goal. Schade outpaced the recovering Konaté and calmly slotted the ball past Giorgi Mamaradashvili to double Brentford's lead.
The incident drew immediate reaction on social media, with many fans expressing concern over the Frenchman's form and reliability in crucial moments. One fan on X said: "Also, that second goal yeah, Schade is not even that fast. How did Konate not catch up with him?"
Another user added: "Van Dijk and Konate playing like they’ve never played together".
A third person said: "Ouattara giving Liverpool nightmares down that left channel. Konate's positional sense gone missing, leaves acres between the lines. Brentford's high press paying dividends at 2-1." While a fourth user added: "Konate offers nothing defensively when the opponents crosses the ball into our box"
The French center-back has been frequently linked with a move to Real Madrid with many fans comparing his situation to that of Trent Alexander Arnold's last season.
Konaté’s $93,000-a-week contract with Liverpool runs until next summer, and Los Blancos are reportedly eager to secure him on a free transfer. However, the defender, who is said to be interested in staying at Anfield, could instead negotiate an even more lucrative deal should he choose to join the Spanish giants.
Supporters want the Reds to sign Marc Guehi in January, however Richard Hughes is reluctant to sign the defender for a fee when he will be available for free in the summer.
Guehi was on Liverpool’s radar during the summer transfer window, but a deal failed to materialize. The Reds had reportedly agreed terms to sign the England international on deadline day. However, as Palace chairman Steve Parish and Wolfsburg boss Oliver Glasner debated Guehi’s future, the defender underwent a medical in London.
From January, overseas clubs will be able to open pre-contract talks with the Palace captain, while Liverpool and other English clubs must wait until the final month of his contract in May. Reports suggest Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are now in contention to secure Guehi’s signature, but they face strong competition from both Liverpool and Real Madrid.
Bayern are reportedly considering Guehi as a replacement for Dayot Upamecano, whose contract is also set to expire this summer. Any potential move could also hinge on the future of Kim Min-jae, with his own contract situation potentially influencing Bayern’s defensive plans.
