Liverpool fans fume at ex-Red who congratulated Harry Maguire on Anfield winner

1 week ago 39

Ex-Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has risked incurring the wrath of Reds supporters by congratulating Harry Maguire on his winning goal for Manchester United on Sunday.

The defender netted the winner at Anfield when he converted from Bruno Fernandes’ 84th-minute cross, ensuring the Red Devils came away with a first win at Liverpool in nine years. The result also inflicted a fourth consecutive defeat on Arne Slot’s side, Liverpool’s worst run in 11 years.

Understandably, there has been a glum mood around the club in recent days, so Lovren’s decision to applaud Maguire’s contributions feels like a peculiar decision.

Writing under Fabrizio Romano’s Instagram post, in which he praised Maguire’s ability to overcome adversity, Lovren replied: “Harry deserves it 100%.

“Not many players would ever come back after what he went through. As a LFC supporter well done Harry!!”

Lovren has since been criticized by Liverpool fans on social media - not for the first time since he left the club.

The Croat was outspoken about Mohamed Salah’s future during his contract standoff last season and often stoked the fire.

“I can talk in more detail,” the POAK defender said in a February interview with Win Win. “Salah believes that there are things missing from the club side, and I hope they’ll be resolved soon. But the current reality is that he’s closer to leaving than staying.

“In the end, I came to the conclusion that the club doesn't respect him enough, or at least not as much as they think they deserve, but that's another side of the story; it's all about what goes on behind the scenes.”

Lovren spent six years at Anfield and was part of the title and Champions League-winning sides under Jurgen Klopp.

Having departed in 2020, the outspoken ex-Red said in an interview that following year that Liverpool missed him.

“No, I don't regret [leaving]. My decision in the summer was firm - to leave Liverpool, and I do not look back.

“I got upset last season when I didn't play, but now everything is different. I think Liverpool miss me more than I miss them and Jurgen Klopp knows this, because we communicate.

“He wrote recently: 'We miss you.' I spoke with Jurgen [after I left], but I will not disclose details. Jurgen said only good things and wished him luck.”
