Liverpool handed major January transfer concern as Marc Guehi on crutches

2 hours ago 2

Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah is poised to receive a late call-up to Thomas Tuchel's England squad, stepping in for the injured Marc Guehi.

The Crystal Palace defender's injury is concerning for Liverpool, a team that continues to be linked with him. The Reds came close to signing Guehi on transfer deadline day during the summer, and they may be tempted to swoop for him again in January after a tough start to the Premier League season.

Liverpool is eighth in the table, with both Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate struggling to impress so far this term. The Reds have also lost Giovanni Leoni to a season-ending injury, which suggests they could dip into the market in January.

Chalobah, meanwhile, has been instrumental for Enzo Maresca this season, featuring in the starting XI for 10 of 11 Premier League games, with a suspension accounting for his sole absence.

Chalobah has played a crucial role in Chelsea's solid defensive displays, helping secure clean sheets in half of his league outings this campaign.

The 26-year-old's performances have attracted the interest of his former Chelsea manager Tuchel, who intends to call upon Chalobah for the Three Lions' World Cup qualifiers against Serbia on Thursday and Albania on Sunday.

Guehi, who missed Palace's draw with Brighton through injury, has now withdrawn from the squad.

The Palace captain is currently relying on crutches, according to Oliver Glasner, having sustained an injury during the Eagles' 3-1 triumph over AZ Alkmaar in the Conference League on Thursday.

"He can't even walk at the moment, so the last two days he was on crutches," Glasner said at the weekend. "That's why he can't play. I don't know how this develops over the next couple of days. At the moment, it looks like he can't play for England as well."

Chalobah will link up with Reece James as the two Chelsea representatives in the latest England camp, with the World Cup just seven months away.

Tuchel's players secured their place in the 2026 tournament following a commanding 5-0 triumph over Latvia last month.

Chalobah, who earned his first senior England cap in June against Senegal, is optimistic about his chances of making the squad next summer.

The Cobham product was recalled from his loan stint at Crystal Palace in January due to a defensive injury crisis at Stamford Bridge. Since then, Chalobah has been a key figure in Maresca's plans - featuring in 38 of Chelsea's 50 matches across all competitions since his return to the club.

Despite being overlooked for first-team selection during the summer of 2024, Chalobah fought his way back into the squad and excelled throughout the remainder of last season.
