Liverpool icon 'brought up to dislike Man Utd' can inflict immediate revenge

James Milner will get the chance to get swift revenge for Liverpool as Manchester United prepares to take on Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday.

United secured a rare victory at Anfield, handing its biggest rival a fourth straight defeat Harry Maguire was the late hero on Merseyside, and the team will now aim to secure another win at home against Brighton.

However, United’s record against the Seagulls at Old Trafford hasn’t been strong: their last home victory came in 2022, with subsequent matches ending in 3-1 defeats twice and a 2-1 loss once, including a January clash where Fabian Hurzeler outsmarted Ruben Amorim early in his tenure.

Milner has been named among the substitutes for the game this afternoon, but will no doubt make an impact off the bench.

As a boyhood Leeds United fan and graduate of their academy, it’s no shock that Milner isn’t particularly fond of Manchester United.

Having gone on to represent both Manchester City and Liverpool during his career, that sentiment has likely only deepened over the years.

“Leeds fans are brought up to dislike Manchester United, as rivals, so red wasn’t allowed,” Milner told FourFourTwo in 2018 when he was asked whether his father really forbade him from wearing red as a child.

“I didn’t have any red shirts or anything, and the first time I ever wore it was probably for England. He did joke when I signed for Liverpool that it was the first time he’d be happy to see me regularly in red.”

Milner has often been open about his hatred for the Red Devils. When Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy back in 2020, during a Gini Wijnaldum Instagram live, Milner was overheard calling United “f****** w*****s,” seemingly unaware he was on camera.

The former England international had just collected his third Premier League winners’ medal that day, having previously won twice with Manchester City.

He admitted it was the first time he’d been happy to see red ribbons on the trophy, as celebrations are usually aligned with the champions’ club colors.

Milner could not help himself in taking a swipe at Liverpool's north-west neighbours. "It’s the first time I ever wanted a red ribbon," Milner was heard saying. "It’s always been United before. F****** w*****s."
