It's claimed Steven Gerrard would be "tempted" by a return to Rangers if the opportunity arose, but the current turmoil at Ibrox would give the Liverpool legend pause for thought regarding a second spell.
Following a dreadful beginning under Russell Martin, the Gers find themselves rooted to second bottom of the table. Martin continues to face mounting pressure despite claiming the team's first domestic victory of the season against Hibs last weekend.
He needs back-to-back positive outcomes against Genk and Livingston in the next five days to stand any chance of appeasing irate supporters. Should he fall short, the demands will grow louder once again, with fans already scouring the market for possible successors.
Sean Dyche has been repeatedly mentioned, while former interim manager Barry Ferguson looks certain to be heavily considered should the position become available.
However, the name that continues to circulate is out-of-work Gerrard, who is now free to take up a role in the UK.
It's believed he was contacted during the summer but declined to return to Glasgow for personal circumstances.
Now, Pat Nevin has acknowledged that Gerrard would be drawn to a return to Ibrox.
"I think Rangers would be quite tempting for Gerrard because remember he's the last one that won a league title," he told betideas.com.
"Celtic have had so many in a row. So you've got to look at Gerrard, he knew how to do that job for a period of time.
"There is a big but. Where are you taking Rangers from, particularly right now? Even just a look at the league table. It's a big old ask. It's a huge ask just now.
"So it's whether he likes what he sees when he looks at that, would he be tempted by that?"
A potential return to Rangers represents the most recent position Gerrard has been connected with.
Former Manchester United midfielder Bryan Robson has previously supported him to assume control at Wrexham, should Phil Parkinson depart.
The Championship team has endured a difficult beginning to its inaugural campaign in the second tier, though the scrutiny on Parkinson has diminished following victories against Norwich City in the league and Reading in the EFL Cup.
