Liverpool in early contract talks with 'outstanding' player after Real Madrid win

Liverpool is reportedly in talks over a new contract for Dominik Szoboszlai after the midfielder’s superb start to the campaign.

The Hungary international has been one of the Reds’ outstanding players so far this season, even during the club’s recent slump in form. The 25-year-old has played every minute of Liverpool’s Premier League and Champions League games so far, underlining his importance to Arne Slot’s side.

Despite the record-breaking signing of Florian Wirtz during the summer seemingly putting his place in the team under threat, Szoboszlai has in fact managed to strengthen his position, and his efforts look to have been recognized by the club.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool is in preliminary talks over a possible new contract for Szoboszlai. His current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2028, having been signed in 2023.

Club sources are said to be downplaying that an agreement is imminent, with fellow midfielder Ryan Gravenberch also making a strong case for an extension after his performances over the last year or so.

News of a possible new deal for Szoboszlai comes after he was lauded by his captain Virgil van Dijk for his performance in Tuesday’s win over Real Madrid.

"What you see is what you get from Dom," Van Dijk told reporters after the game.

"He is very important. The energy he brings on the pitch is incredible and the quality that he has is outstanding.

"Like you said, he is learning each and every game and he is developing into the player we all feel like he could be. He is already showing that for the country he is playing for and it is about keeping on doing it for the rest of the season.

"So far he has had a great start to the season and he has to keep going. Keep your head down and keep performing."

Liverpool.com says: Szoboszlai would certainly be deserving of a new deal. Even when all the talk seemed to be about Wirtz at the start of the season, and certain pundits seemed eager to push him out of the team, he has only gone on to prove why that talk of him being dropped was ridiculous.

He played a vital role in last season’s title triumph, and it’s clear just how important he is to this team. Extending his stay at Anfield would be just reward for his efforts.
