Liverpool and the rest of the Premier League clubs had a week to forget in the Champions League, with the English contingent looking to make up significant ground next week

Liverpool was unable to get a positive result in the Champions League this week, losing 1-0 to Galatasaray. And it was far from the only English team to struggle.
Not one Premier League side won in Europe in the first leg of their last-16 ties. Mario Lemina's header was the only goal of the game at RAMS Park on Tuesday, before the other five teams either lost or drew.
Chelsea looked to be holding PSG in Paris until a late collapse. Liam Rosenior's men ended up conceding three times late on to lose 5-2 at the Parc des Princes, giving themselves a mountain to climb at Stamford Bridge.

The Anfield game is set for next Wednesday, with Victor Osimhen sending a message ahead of the second leg.
"We are a family together with the Galatasaray fans," he said after the first game. "We did a very good job today. I think we can hurt Liverpool in the second leg. We have done a good job so far."
Elsewhere, Real Madrid hammered Manchester City by three Federico Valverde goals in the first half. Vinicius Jr missed a penalty in the second half, but it appears unlikely that the Spanish giant will be heading out.

Earlier in the day, Arsenal could only draw 1-1 with Jarell Quansah's Bayer Leverkusen, with the German side conceding an equalizer late on when Noni Madueke was fouled inside the penalty area.
After a fairly lengthy delay, Kai Havertz popped up with an important goal against his former club. Arsenal, as a result of that draw, will be the favorite to get through with the second game at the Emirates.
Tottenham was well beaten by Atletico Madrid, with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky suffering a Loris Karius-like calamity. He was substituted after 15 minutes at the Metropolitano, having made a series of errors.
Finally, Newcastle almost beat Barcelona, only for a late Lamine Yamal penalty to level things in that game. It is 1-1 heading into the reverse fixture at the Camp Nou.

Given where things stand in the Champions League, only Arsenal should be confident of progressing. Liverpool, even the Galatasaray manager admitted, is the favorite to go through in its tie too.
With a three-goal deficit to overturn, Chelsea and Manchester City both look set to head out of the competition. Tottenham, almost certainly, is also set to depart, though that is no surprise.
Newcastle got a good result, really, against Barcelona, but is very much the second favorite heading back to Spain without a lead to hold onto in that tie.
With six goals scored and 16 conceded, it wasn't a good midweek for the Premier League continent, many of whose hopes of Champions League glory are hanging on by a thread.
