Liverpool is reportedly considering tying Curtis Jones down to a long-term contract in a move it failed to make during Trent Alexander-Arnold's time at the club.
The midfielder has established himself as an important member of Arne Slot’s squad and featured 46 times for the Reds last season in all competitions. He has also played six times this campaign, but a niggling injury kept him out of the recent wins over Burnley and Atletico Madrid.
The lack of English players in the Liverpool squad only increases his importance in the side. Jones is one of just five “homegrown players” registered in the Champions League roster, along with Freddie Woodman, Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong, and Joe Gomez.
According to TBR Football, Jones’ enhanced status will be rewarded with a new deal “pretty soon”.
The report claims that Jones and Ryan Gravenberch “will be the next big deals Liverpool really commit to”.
The summer exits of Caoimhin Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold, Jarell Quansah, Tyler Morton, and Harvey Elliott mean Jones is now the most established academy graduate in the squad. He is also the only scouser in Slot’s team following Alexander-Arnold’s exit.
Indeed, should Liverpool tie down the midfielder to a long-term deal, it would indicate it has learnt from the Alexander-Arnold saga.
Jones has two years left on his current deal. It was around the same point in the latter stages of Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool career that he began to consider a move away from Anfield.
Reports over the summer claimed Liverpool staff did not prioritize the right-back’s contract extension when it entered the final two years, which, in hindsight, has been viewed as a sign of complacency.
Alexander-Arnold was understood to be disappointed by Liverpool’s stance and began considering his options. That ultimately ended with his defection to Real Madrid.
Ibrahima Konate now faces a similar dilemma. His Anfield contract expires in June, and he has been continually linked with a move to Real.
Liverpool has tried and failed to secure an extension for the defender, with fans keen not to see an Alexander-Arnold repeat.
Another player whose future looks uncertain is Andy Robertson. Liverpool’s vice-captain could move on for free this summer and TBR Football claims the Reds have no plans at this stage to renew his current terms.
The report adds that a possible extension for Robertson “will be assessed later”, with updates unlikely in the remaining months of 2025.
