Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler aims dig at $100M Man Utd star - 'Academy player'

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has delivered a damning verdict on new Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko, likening him to an "academy player" as he struggles to settle into Premier League life.

The Slovenian forward joined United for £74 million from RB Leipzig during the summer transfer window. At the time of his signing in August, £74 million translated into roughly $100 million.

But Sesko's start has been underwhelming, with just two goals in 11 Premier League appearances. The 22-year-old's difficulties have been compounded by an injury sustained before the international break, which will keep him sidelined until at least mid-December.

Throughout the summer, both Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres were heavily linked with moves to United and Arsenal, with Gyokeres eventually securing a switch to London.

The pair are frequently compared as they adjust to English soccer's demands.

Speaking to Adventure Gamers, Fowler was asked which striker appeared better suited to the Premier League, and the former England international didn't hold back in his assessment of Sesko. "For me, I think the obvious one is Gyokeres," he stated.

"He's probably better suited to the Premier League, and he understands what is needed in terms of speed, energy, and commitment.

"Whereas Sesko has probably struggled a little at times. He looks a little bit, I hope this doesn't come across wrong, but he looks a bit of an academy player.

"I have no doubt he's a good player. No one's questioning his ability, but at the minute I think out of those two, it's Gyokeres by far who looks better equipped."

Alan Shearer has been particularly scathing in his assessment of Sesko, suggesting United would have anticipated more from the striker given the substantial fee the club shelled out for him.

Speaking to Betfair, he said: "One player that must do better for United is Benjamin Sesko. They paid 70-odd million for him. That was a lot of money, I know it's the market, but it was too much. He's had a tough start, and I don't expect huge things from him to be honest.

"I think he's a good player, but I'm not sure he's any more than that. He should have scored a couple more goals than he has so far. It's been a tough start for him, especially considering the money United paid."

Sesko now confronts a prolonged spell on the sidelines despite steering clear of serious injury. He will be unavailable for this weekend's encounter with Everton, while also missing upcoming games against Crystal Palace, West Ham, Wolves, and Bournemouth.

United head into this weekend's match sitting seventh in the Premier League table following a five-match unbeaten streak. Joshua Zirkzee and Chido Obi are among the alternatives that Amorim could deploy to spearhead the attack in Sesko's absence.
