Manchester United has made the brutal decision to fire Ruben Amorim just over a year since his arrival at Old Trafford.

Amorim lashed out at the club's owners before and after the draw with Leeds on Sunday and has now been axed, despite an improvement in performances this term. United sits sixth in the Premier League having ended last season in 15th place.

The Portuguese was heavily linked with Liverpool after the departure of Jurgen Klopp and appeared as the favorite for the job at one stage, before the Reds went for Arne Slot, who won the title in his first season in charge.

It was reported in Portugal that Liverpool had reached an agreement with Amorim after he impressed with Sporting CP but he hit back at those claims in a press conference.

"This is the last time I'm going to talk about my future. There was no interview and certainly no agreement," he said.

"The only thing we all want here is to be champions with Sporting, nothing will change. I'm the Sporting coach and there was no interview or agreement with any club.

"I'm just focused, as always, on representing my club. As I no longer have anything else to say."

It later emerged that Liverpool decided against Amorim due to a number of factors, including his determination to stick to his favored 3-4-3 system, which has ultimately proven to be his downfall at Old Trafford.

Despite seemingly not having the players for the system, the Portuguese coach has often stuck to his guns and it has taken until recently for him to even consider tweaking things.

Amorim also had a release clause of $16M in his contract at Sporting and his salary demands also made Liverpool look elsewhere. And while United floundered last term, Liverpool flourished under Slot's guidance.

A statement from United on Monday read: "Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.

"Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.

"With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

"The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future."
