Liverpool receives transfer setback as Premier League rival makes announcement

Liverpool received a transfer blow on Monday with confirmation from Aston Villa that Morgan Rogers has penned a new deal with the Midlands club.

The England international is a transfer target for the Reds and is on the club’s radar, along with Bournemouth’s Antonie Semenyo. Liverpool did not consider a summer move for Rogers, but could be tempted to approach Villa in future windows, despite his performance levels dropping considerably this campaign.

The 23-year-old was voted PFA Young Player of the Season last season but has managed just one goal and three assists in 16 club appearances this season. However, Villa is fully aware of Rogers’ talent and potential and has rewarded him with a new deal that runs until 2031.

“The most important thing for me is enjoying my football and being able to express myself,” the former Manchester City youngster told Villa’s website. “There’s no reason why I wouldn’t want to stay here.

“The faith from the people at the club is a really nice feeling, and I couldn’t wait to sign. I’m really happy.

“It’s home. Being from the area makes it that bit sweeter, but the manager, the players, the staff, everyone here is so warm and welcoming every day.

“I’m excited to come in and train, work hard and give my all every day. I really enjoy it.”

It’s unclear whether Rogers’ new deal includes a release clause. That was the case when Villa tied Jack Grealish down to new terms in 2020, only for the now-Everton man to move on the following summer.

Rogers’ previous contract was due to expire in 2030, and it’s believed that his 12-month extension includes a significant pay increase.

Rogers’ ability to play in multiple positions has attracted Liverpool’s interest. The Villa star is capable of playing on either wing, in the no.10 role or as a striker.

He has also become an England regular under Thomas Tuchel and has played in all eight matches the German has overseen.

Rogers has started the last three at international level and scored in October’s 3-0 win over Wales.

The ex-Middlesbrough man is also an attractive proposition for Liverpool given its lack of homegrown players, an issue that resulted in Federico Cheisa initially being left out of the Champions League squad at the start of the season.

The Reds only registered five senior players in its European squad that count as homegrown.
