Liverpool's two Mohamed Salah replacements as Reds face $100M investment

1 week ago 50

Liverpool is reportedly considering a couple of Premier League stars as possible long-term replacements for Mohamed Salah, who has shown signs of decline in recent months.

The Reds have just spent a fortune revamping their attack, committing more than $100 million each to the signings of Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz.

But their biggest player of all, Salah, will need replacing too at some point in the future. Salah has been in poor form since the start of the season, and even if he finds form in the coming weeks and months, the reality is he turns 34 next summer, and he is closer to the end of his Liverpool career than he is to the start of it.

Football Insider reports that Antoine Semenyo and Anthony Gordon are among the candidates that Liverpool has identified to replace Salah in the future; the directness that both players offer is said to appeal to Liverpool.

Semenyo, 25, has been the best winger in the Premier League so far this term, scoring six goals and registering three assists for Bournemouth, while Gordon, 24, has been excelling for Newcastle in Europe.

Gordon, who looked set to join Liverpool last year, has netted four times in the Champions League, although he is yet to get off the mark in the league this season.

Both players have been valued at around the $100 million mark previously, so it would be a huge commitment for Liverpool to move for either player next year.

Anthony Gordon is being linked with Liverpool once again

Meanwhile, Arne Slot refused to focus on Salah's struggles and instead spoke about the team's struggles as a whole after being asked about the Egyptian's difficulties during a press conference on Friday.

"I think it's been a difficult moment for all of us," Slot said. "No-one is used to losing, for all the players that have played here for so many years and even for the new players as well because we started the season with seven wins. If you start to lose once, that's a difficult moment for everyone, let alone if you [lose] twice, three or four times."

Salah was back in the Liverpool team for the Premier League game away to Brentford on Saturday, having been dropped for the Champions League trip to Frankfurt in midweek.

Prior to the game in West London, Salah had not scored from open play in the league since the opening game of the campaign.
