Liverpool has seen an opening bid for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak turned down, according to reports. The Magpies have been unwilling to sell their star asset up to this point in the summer.
Eddie Howe has already confirmed there is no chance that Isak rejoins his teammates after he chose not to travel to Asia for the pre-season tour. And he put it on the club to make a decision on what comes next.
The report from The Athletic adds that Newcastle has tried to tie Isak down to an improved contract, which would have included a release clause that came into effect in the summer of 2026.
But the 25-year-old has not changed his stance on wanting to depart, which has been made clear to the club by Isak and his representatives for some time.
This week, Isak has been training with his former club, Real Sociedad. Liverpool.com has previously reported that the Reds had made an approach to Newcastle for the player, only to be told that he wasn't up for grabs.
Isak still has another three years left to run on his existing contract at St James' Park. But the player is keen to move on and join Liverpool, who appear to be the only option for the Swedish number nine.
Newcastle has been seeking to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford and also the RB Leipzig and Slovenia striker, Benjamin Sesko. But so far, it has experienced a difficult summer when it comes to attracting new players.
The likes of Joao Pedro and Hugo Ekitike were considered by the North East side but have ended up elsewhere. Liverpool signed Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt but could yet add Isak as well.
"My wish is he stays and we see him playing again next year," Newcastle boss Howe said on Tuesday ahead of his side's defeat against a K-League XI in a friendly fixture.

"We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. My wish is that he stays, but that's not in my full control."
Newcastle is next in action over the weekend when it plays Spurs. Howe will no doubt be asked for the latest before and after that game amid the latest developments.
Liverpool is set to face Newcastle away from home in the third match of the new Premier League season. That will be the Magpies' first home game of the 2025/26 campaign.
