Liverpool transfer news amid new Alexander Isak blow and Marc Guehi backup plan

1 day ago 54

The start of the new Premier League season is just a matter of a few days away now, but one name continues to dominate the headlines as Liverpool could yet make another huge signing.

Having missed out on the Community Shield on Sunday, Arne Slot's side will have to turn its attention quickly to Bournemouth on Friday as the Reds' title defense gets underway.

Will Alexander Isak be part of their squad this season? Speculation continues to grow around the Newcastle striker's future, but the latest reports from St James' Park don't make for good reading for Liverpool fans, or Virgil van Dijk for that matter.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today.

Alexander Isak (Newcastle)

Alexander Isak is increasingly likely to stay at Newcastle, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

It's suggested that the Magpies' options for new strikers are running thin on the ground after they failed to land Benjamin Sesko.

Of course, it would need a new bid from Liverpool if there is still any chance of Isak leaving St James' Park, but with just three weeks remaining in the transfer window, he may have to stay put.

Liverpool.com says: If Isak is to join Liverpool, it does feel like it could end up being a last-minute deal, considering Newcastle's luck in trying to sign forwards this summer.

That, and whether the Reds are willing to increase their original offer, feels as though it will decide his future. It will be interesting to see just how strong Newcastle's resolve is during the rest of the summer.

Giovanni Leoni (Parma)

Liverpool could be stepping up its interest in Giovanni Leoni, with both Fabrizio Romano and Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg claiming the Reds are seriously considering the Parma teenager.

The 18-year-old is said to be on the club's shortlist as it looks for a new defender, and Plettenberg suggests Liverpool could push for a move if a deal for Marc Guehi falls through.

Several top Italian clubs are said to be keen on Leoni, but Liverpool is supposedly advancing on him in the background. Parma is claimed to be looking for at least $46.5M, which is suggested to be a major hurdle for some of the clubs interested.

Liverpool.com says: Leoni would be an interesting choice if Liverpool went after him, not to mention it would perhaps be a big gamble if he needed to step up at some point this season. A move for the teenager would perhaps point to the Reds aiming to sign Guehi for free next summer, so it'll be interesting to see what happens on both of those fronts.
