Liverpool transfer news as Alexander Isak future 'probably' decided amid Rodrygo blow

1 week ago 72

Pre-season is all but done now for Liverpool, with attention turning to the 2025/26 season now - although it looks as though there will be more transfers to come over the next few weeks.

Arne Slot's side did the double over Athletic Club on Monday, winning their two games 4-1 and 3-2 at Anfield to set them up nicely for Sunday's Community Shield against Crystal Palace, with the Premier League title defense kicking off just five days later against Bournemouth.

The headlines though continue to be dominated by one man, and all eye will be on Newcastle this week to see what Alexander Isak's next steps are.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today.

Alexander Isak (Newcastle)

The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope has cast serious doubt over whether Alexander Isak will return to training with Newcastle this week, and suggested the striker may have already played his final game for the club.

Isak was spotted driving into the Magpies’ training ground on Monday, potentially for talks over his future amid the ongoing links with Liverpool. Newcastle’s other players were given the day off after only arriving back in the UK from South Korea that morning.

According to Hope, Eddie Howe hadn’t spoken to Isak over the weekend, and the reporter admits he would be surprised if he trains with his teammates this week, while suggesting that Newcastle’s pursuit of Benjamin Sesko points to the Swedish international "probably" moving on.

He does, however, include the disclaimer that Liverpool will still need to come back with an offer, and that if Newcastle doesn’t find a replacement for Isak, he will stay.

Liverpool.com says: All eyes will be on Isak this week. If he's not seen in training with Newcastle, you can bet the speculation around a move to Liverpool will go into overdrive. Let's see what happens...

Rodrygo (Real Madrid)

Rodrygo has decided to stay at Real Madrid and fight for his place in Xabi Alonso’s side, according to Spanish outlet AS.

Despite speculation linking him with Liverpool, as well as Arsenal and Tottenham, the report claims the Brazilian is “banking” on a stay at the Bernabeu as he believes he has enough quality to add to Madrid’s current options.

Rodrygo was touted as a potential option to replace Luis Diaz following the winger’s move to Bayern Munich, although the Reds would have had to go big again after Florian Wirtz’s signing and a potential move for Isak.

Liverpool.com says: Rodrygo has always felt like it would be a transfer too far for Liverpool. The Reds need to sign a new defender as soon as possible, and if they are to go big again for Isak, then that would have just made Rodrygo feel even less likely.
