Liverpool transfer news as Marc Guehi move 'expected' amid Dayot Upamecano update

2 hours ago 44

Liverpool's perfect start to the season is at an end, with the Reds' luck having finally ran out at Crystal Palace.

Having benefited from a number of late winners already this season, Arne Slot's side found themselves on the wrong side of one on Saturday as Eddie Nketiah sentenced Liverpool to a first defeat of the campaign, just minutes after Federico Chiesa had looked to have earned his side a point.

The defeat will have given Slot plenty to think about, not least with a certain defender on the opposite side impressing, and potentially giving him something to think about before the January transfer window.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today.

Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace)

Crystal Palace expects Liverpool to make a move for Marc Guehi in January, according to TBR Football.

The Reds of course saw a deadline day transfer for the England international collapse after Palace pulled the plug at the eleventh hour, and subsequent reports suggested Liverpool would wait until next summer to return for him.

This latest report though claims that Palace expects an offer from Anfield in January, and that Eagles chairman Steve Parish is ready to sell - although manager Oliver Glasner may yet have a say.

It's also suggested that, while the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich have all been linked, Liverpool is confident that Guehi will choose a move to Merseyside.

Liverpool.com says: It does make a lot of sense for Liverpool to make a move for Guehi in January, especially with Giovanni Leoni likely to be out for the remainder of the season.

With so much time still left in the campaign, going through it with just three senior center-backs is a big risk, especially when two of those - Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez - don't have the best injury records, so even if it means missing out on what would be an unbelievable free signing, Guehi feels more than worth whatever Liverpool would have to pay in January - which surely won't be much.

Dayot Upamecano (Bayern Munich)

Liverpool is looking at Dayot Upamecano as another center-back option, with Bayern Munich struggling to tie him down to a new contract, Christian Falk has told Bayern Insider.

Upamecano will become a free agent next summer unless he signs a new deal before the end of the season, but Bayern is claimed to have been trying to get a contract signing "for months" now.

That has supposedly alerted Liverpool, with Real Madrid, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain also said to be interested.

Liverpool.com says: Upamecano is a decent back-up option to Guehi, and when a player like that is potentially going to be available for free, it's only right that Liverpool sits up and takes notice.

If it was a choice between the two, we'd still probably go with Guehi, but if the Reds are going to wait until the summer, they will need plenty of options to pick from.
