Liverpool youngster defended after costly error on injury return - 'Never come for my players'

1 hour ago 2

On loan Liverpool goalkeeper Harvey Davies has been defended by his manager after making an error in the Sussex side's Vertu Trophy defeat against Peterborough on Tuesday.

In the first half, Davies, who made the move in June, was caught in possession and Jimmy-Jay Morgan opened the scoring. However, Crawley leveled with around 20 minutes to play, and its goalkeeper made several important saves to keep it in the contest — he bounced back well, just as he did after conceding a penalty nine minutes into his debut.

Eventually, Donay O'Brien-Brady scored in the dying seconds of the game to earn Peterborough a narrow 2-1 victory. That result sent the Posh through to the knockout phase, with Crawley like Liverpool U21s — crashing out.

Manager Scott Lindsay had his say on Davies at the final whistle, sticking up for his goalkeeper and making his feelings clear.

"Anyone who wants to talk about Harvey Davies on the first goal, don't talk about Harvey Davies, talk about Scott Lindsey because it's me who coaches him to play that way," he said.

"We're not always going to make every pass spot on. I felt it was probably the wrong choice; there was a midfield player who dropped down at the right moment.

"Maybe that was the right choice. But I could understand what he was trying to do. It's never ever come for my players. It's always come for me on that."

Lindsay was pleased with Davies' showing overall. This was his first appearance since September because of a finger injury.

"He made some fantastic saves," the Crawley boss continued. "I remember one, Dicko (Kris Dixon, the goalkeeping coach) was saying that he made the save that hit the bar.

"He made some great saves. He had a lot of the ball tonight. He had to make a lot of decisions. He got one wrong.

"It's his first game back as well for a while, so we have to give him plenty of space and room to get back into it again. I thought he was good tonight."

Crawley is back in league action on Saturday when it travels to Gillingham. Davies will be competing with Jojo Wollacott for the number one jersey in League Two.

Liverpool.com says: Davies is a good goalkeeping talent and he has all the tools to give himself a good career in the EFL. In that position, you are made by your reaction to errors and that will be telling.
