AC Milan are still very much in the Scudetto race, but to cement themselves, they could do with a reinforcement for the defence before the month ends.
After 17 games played, Milan have collected an impressive 38 points, currently sitting two points ahead of their rivals Inter. In short, while many wanted to rule them out a few weeks ago, the Rossoneri are still in the Scudetto race.
Between now and January 18, Massimiliano Allegri’s men will play another four games, so it’s clear that the situation can change quickly. With mostly wins in these ones, however, it would look very good.
A defender to increase their chances
In his latest editorial for Calciomercato.com, Andrea Longoni discussed Milan’s ability to stay in the race despite various heavy absences. They have Allegri to thank for that, per the journalist, but they could increase their chances even more by adding a centre-back.
“16 consecutive games unbeaten. Milan lost the opening round, a lifetime ago, and since then have only won or drawn. They currently have an additional nine points compared to last season. The main architect of this is Massimiliano Allegri. With a different coach, the Rossoneri would be in a different position.
“The way they are playing isn’t extraordinary, but right now it’s terribly practical. With all the absences and problems of key players, with the decimated squad, and the fact that Leao and Pulisic have only played together once, expecting more would have been foolish.

“The hope, for those who have Milan in their hearts, is to recover the best condition of all players and be able to count on their No.10 and No.11 together more consistently.
“I don’t mind Fullkrug. The indications from Milanello were positive, and his introduction was convincing. He’s a number 9, and that’s already a quality. Milan have been missing someone with his characteristics for some time, someone capable of moving the team forward, jostling, and so on.
“With an improved physical condition, he could be an excellent substitute. Leao and Pulisic will be the starters, Fullkrug the first substitution. Then we’ll see, in the transfer window, what will happen to Nkunku.
“In this regard, Milan are Scudetto contenders, but if they use this window properly to complete their squad, their chances of competing until the end will increase. With a new top-notch defender, their chances would increase: now it’s up to Igli Tare and the transfer team,” he stated.
Based on the latest reports, Milan are yet to identify a primary target for the centre-back position, with various names being evaluated.
