Many things went wrong for AC Milan in their 2-2 draw against Parma, but as highlighted by Andrea Longoni, an ‘unacceptable’ mistake by Pervis Estupinan was the start of everything.
After going two goals up, Milan looked rather comfortable and were able to dominate the game, making things look easy in possession. However, just before the break, Estupinan was bodied in a challenge and opened up the space needed for Parma to find their way back.
In his latest editorial for MilanNews, Andrea Longoni discussed the outcome of the game and Milan’s struggles against low-level sides. He also highlighted Estupinan and the mistake that kickstarted everything.
“Milan threw away a game that, with a two-goal lead and full control, should have been won. A mortal sin that a team aiming for something significant certainly can’t afford. It’s even more serious given that the team has repeatedly done it against low-level sides.

“They have dropped seven points in the games against Cremonese, Pisa, and Parma. Parma had only scored five goals in the entire league before yesterday: two against Milan, in addition to hitting the post and other near-misses.
“The match was effectively changed by Estupinan’s incredible error: unacceptable at this level. With the advantage on the ball, you can’t lose it like that. We are also talking about a player who is almost 28 years old; he can’t make a mistake like an inexperienced youngster,
“After that, even with Parma closing the gap, the Rossoneri cannot stop playing and completely surrender to their opponents like they did. A worrying blackout: a mental problem, which will require a lot of work,” he writes.
Milan certainly have themselves and while Estupinan’s mistake was bad, as we also made sure to state in our player ratings, it doesn’t excuse the mental collapse at the start of the second half. Massimiliano Allegri still has a lot to work on, in other words.
