Luis Diaz issues blunt Liverpool transfer verdict after Steven Gerrard return plea

The ex-Liverpool star is enjoying a positive first season at Bayern Munich, and scored once again in the 2-1 Champions League victory over Real Madrid, which could set up a trip to Anfield

Luis Diaz has insisted he has no regrets about leaving Liverpool and feels he made the right decision to sign for Bayern Munich last summer.

The winger arrived in Bavaria for a fee of €75 million ($87M/£66M) and immediately settled, providing 23 goals and 18 assists so far. He could even be on course for European glory, with Diaz netting the opening goal in Bayern’s Champions League quarterfinal first-leg win over Real Madrid on Tuesday.

He also looks set to add a Bundesliga winners’ medal to his individual collection, with Bayern nine points clear at the top of the table.

Vincent Kompany’s side is widely considered among Europe’s best, and given Liverpool’s struggles this season, perhaps it is no surprise Diaz feels moving to Germany was the correct choice.

“Making the decision to come to Bayern was the right one. I feel very happy and I enjoy every match,” the 29-year-old told ESPN after the 2-1 win at the Bernabeu.

“I feel very good, strong, and that allows me to be available to help the team.”

Diaz’s excellent campaign even sparked comments from Steven Gerrard that he would like to see the Colombian back at Anfield, while Jamie Carragher agrees that Liverpool misses the attacker.

He could be set for an Anfield return later this month if both Bayern and Liverpool progress in the Champions League quarterfinals. The clubs will meet in the semis if Real and PSG can be eliminated in the coming week.

Asked about Bayern’s performance in Madrid, Diaz responded: “We're very happy, but we're left with the feeling that we could have scored one or two more goals. We played a great match against a very difficult opponent

“We recovered the ball, moved it quickly, and threaded the pass through. We had already studied Real Madrid, and the play played out as we had planned.

“We felt more comfortable, we recovered the ball more, and we controlled the game better. That's what we like to do.”

Diaz and Harry Kane were on target for Bayern, with Kylian Mbappe scoring a crucial late goal for Real that keeps the tie alive heading into next week’s second leg.

During his time at Liverpool, Diaz netted 41 goals in 148 appearances and won the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup (twice).

He made 36 appearances in the Reds’ 2024/25 title-winning campaign, and his departure is among the many reasons attributed to Liverpool’s demise this season.
