Mike Maignan was the hero of the night for AC Milan in their derby win over Inter, but he insisted the team must take things game by game.
Milan secured another huge three points on Sunday night at San Siro, beating their city rivals Inter 1-0 in the Derby della Madonnina. Christian Pulisic was in the right place at the right time to score the only goal, tucking in a rebound after a Yann Sommer save from Alexis Saelemaekers’ shot.
After making a brilliant stop in the first half to deny Lautaro Martinez, Maignan was able to be the hero again. A penalty was awarded for a foul by Strahinja Pavlovic on Marcus Thuram after a VAR review, but the Frenchman guessed the right way to keep Hakan Calhanoglu out, who is usually lethal from 12 yards.
Maignan was rightly awarded Player of the Match after the full-time whistle and he spoke to DAZN to offer his assessments after a night full of drama and ultimately joy. MilanNews relayed his comments.
What was your favourite save tonight?
“All of them. Each one was important to keep a clean sheet. We all suffered together, but when we play like this, we can get positive results. We have to keep going and keep working.”
Did you know that the last time a goalkeeper saved a goal in the derby, it was Tatarusanu, and then at the end of the season you won the Scudetto?
“(Laughs) We shouldn’t make that comparison. It’s positive for tonight, but there are still a lot of matchdays. We need to take these positives to keep working and move forward.”
