Man City consider terminating loan deal to add to Pep Guardiola squad

Manchester City are thinking about bringing a player back from a loan deal with no breakthrough for Sverre Nypan at Middlesbrough

Manchester City are looking at bringing Sverre Nypan into Pep Guardiola's squad for the second half of the season with no sign of his situation on loan at Middlesbrough improving. The Norwegian was signed by the club last summer for £12.5m and there was a lot of interest from clubs looking to sign him on loan.

Middlesbrough won that race and the 19-year-old initially impressed in the Championship as Rob Edwards and his team made their way towards the top of the division. However, minutes for the teenager dried up and that has not changed since Edwards left for Wolves and was replaced by Kim Hellberg.

While injuries haven't helped, Nypan has not started any of the last 18 matches for the north-east club and City are weighing up whether to terminate his loan. City are understood to have been happy with his attitude - especially when not playing - but the plan to acclimatise him with English football has not worked.

Another loan could be an option - young centre-back Jahmai Simpson-Pusey is enjoying the early days of a loan spell at Koln in the Bundesliga after being shut out of the Celtic team this season - but the Blues are considering whether to bring him back to Manchester. Unlike Max Alleyne, Nypan would be ineligible to play in the Champions League or Premier League because of homegrown quotas but training every day with Guardiola's squad would help his development.

City are still expected to be kept busy in the final days of the transfer window despite completing their main business already. Oscar Bobb signed for Fulham on Friday after the Blues brought in Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi earlier in the month.

Nottingham Forest are showing late interest in fourth-choice goalkeeper Stefan Ortega and Kalvin Phillips could be a late mover, as well as Steph Mfuni going to Watford on loan and other youngsters potentially heading out for their first taste of senior football.
