Man City considers 'huge, late move' for Liverpool transfer target

2 days ago 13

Manchester City is being linked with a late move for Rodrygo this summer, which would no doubt catch the eye of Liverpool.

The Real Madrid winger has been linked with a move away from the Bernabeu throughout the summer, having seemingly dropped down the pecking order under new manager Xabi Alonso.

Rodrygo struggled for minutes during the Club World Cup, and with Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr being favored, reports have suggested that the Brazilian is considering a move to the Premier League. Liverpool has been linked with his services, particularly amid the departure of Luis Diaz, while Arsenal has also been touted as a possible destination.

City though may look to beat both of its rivals to the punch, with Fabrizio Romano claiming Pep Guardiola’s side could now make a late move for the winger.

It’s suggested that, with City set to offload a number of its forward options, Rodrygo could be pursued as a replacement. Already, Jack Grealish looks to be on his way to Everton on loan, with the Toffees given the option to buy.

James McAtee is also said to be on the verge of joining Nottingham Forest permanently, while Tottenham is making a move for Savinho, with the 21-year-old - who only joined City last year - open to the transfer.

City wants around $81 million for the Brazilian, which could be used straight away to land his international teammate.

Guardiola is said to be a big fan of Rodrygo, and sees him as the ideal addition to his squad, although he won’t come cheaply, with Romano suggesting Real wants around $116M for his services.

A move to the Etihad Stadium for Rodrygo would undoubtedly add a new layer of intrigue to this season’s title race, with the new Premier League season getting underway this weekend, and Liverpool in particular would cast an interested eye on the deal.

The Reds have been linked with Rodrygo for some time now, not just this summer, and the Brazilian even came close to a move to Anfield in 2017 before he joined Real.

“We didn’t close the deal because I didn’t want to. I wanted to stay at Santos even though the offer was very good,” Rodrygo explained last year (via Goal).

“The pathway they promised me would also have been very good for my career. I was going to finish my studies in England to prepare for European football. It had always been my dream to play in Europe.

“Everything was very good, but my desire spoke louder. I wanted to stay at Santos and make a bit of history at the club. And that’s what happened: I was able to fulfil my dream of playing for Santos. But it’s true, I almost went to Liverpool.”
