Man City primed for transfer windfall as three academy players seal moves

Manchester City brought in £27m from Oscar Bobb this month and a number of academy deals sorted could pay off in time

Manchester City have been busy boosting their first team in the January window, spending £82.5m to bring in Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi. Unlike last year, they have not been brought in in winter to salvage a campaign but because the opportunity arose for players who otherwise would have been targeted at the end of the season.

As two have come in, one has left with Oscar Bobb completing a permanent move to Fulham this week for £27m. Having joined City's academy when he was 16, Bobb helps City's financial picture and also adds to the phenomenal amount of money that the club's academy has generated in sales over the last decade.

That total may be boosted in the coming years by three exits agreed this month. Mahamadou Susoho, Seb Naylor and Justin Oboavwoduo have left the academy in the last few days and the three youngsters could add a few extra million to City if their moves go well.

Susoho, 21, has joined Turkish top-flight club Kocaelispor for an initial fee of £346,000 (€400,000) after nearly a decade at City's academy. That money will be doubled if Susoho hits certain performance-related targets, while the Blues have also inserted a 40 per cent sell-on clause, a buyback option and matching rights into the sale.

Justin Oboavwoduo has headed to Turin where he will start with Juventus's second team after coming through every age group at City from Under-9s. He has moved initially on a free transfer, but can make City up to £2.6m (€3m) in performance clauses if he takes to life in Italy.

Seb Naylor, another to have come through every age in City's academy, has signed on a free transfer for Championship side Bristol City. The Blues will get 25 per cent of any money from the 20-year-old defender's next transfer. More deals involving academy players are expected before the January window closes.

City could also get £500,000 from the departure of senior goalkeeper Stefan Ortega. The fourth-choice stopper has joined Nottingham Forest on a free transfer but could make the Blues some extra money with his performances at the City Ground.
