Manchester City star Rodri faces FA charge and possible ban after referee claim

The Manchester City midfielder let rip in a post-match interview following the 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Sunday

Manchester City star Rodri is facing an FA charge and potential ban - after suggesting referees have an agenda against Pep Guardiola's side.

The Spain international and Ballon d'Or winner Rodri blasted the officials following his side's damaging 2-2 draw at Tottenham on Sunday. Rodri was furious after Dominik Solanke's first goal for Spurs was allowed to stand.

England striker Solanke appeared to kick through the back of Marc Guehi's leg to score, and even though VAR reviewed the incident, it deemed no foul was committed - despite it appearing that Solanke hadn't even made contact with the ball. Tottenham went on to equalise and earned an unlikely point, putting a huge dent in City's title hopes.

The decision means that City have now had VAR decisions go against them in recent games with Newcastle, Manchester United and Wolves. And speaking post-match, Rodri appeared to question whether officials were being fair, as he insisted they 'have to be neutral'.

Rodri said: "I know we won too much and the people don’t want us to win, but the referee has to be neutral. And for me, honestly, it's not fair. It's not fair because we work so hard in these situations, and now to make these decisions, we have to move on.

"Of course you need to come back, but at the end, when everything is finished, we are frustrated because it's so clear, the foul. He (Solanke) kicked the leg, and of course with the push of the action on the ball, the ball goes in.

"We have to pay attention to these little things, otherwise it's going to be difficult for everyone because this league is like this.

"It's about small details and everything counts, so I think this is a very tough day for us in this sense.

"Honestly, I never speak about referees. I respect their job massively, but they have to pay attention to these things. He's kicked the leg. It's so clear."

The FA are expected to take a dim view of Rodri's comments - and charge with him 'questioning the integrity of match officials'.

Losing Rodri to a possible suspension would be a further blow to Guardiola. City have won just one of their last six league games and now trail league leaders Arsenal by six points.

Guardiola's men are also still competing for trophies on all four fronts - and face a hectic fixture schedule in the coming weeks.
