Marc Cucurella has hit out at his own club in a rant that will be music to the ears of Liverpool.

The Reds are still battling to secure Champions League qualification for next season, and find themselves locked in a battle with Chelsea for what could be the final spot from the Premier League.

With Manchester United and Aston Villa sitting six and five points ahead respectively with just seven games remaining, it’s looking increasingly likely that Arne Slot’s side will have to rely on England gaining an extra spot if it is to secure a place at Europe’s top table again.

There is still a lot of work to do just to secure fifth place though, with Chelsea sitting just a point behind, although there are signs that the Blues are crumbling.

They’ve lost three of their last four games and failed to take advantage of Liverpool’s own poor form, with boss Liam Rosenior already coming under pressure after his appointment in January.

And Cucurella looks to have turned the heat up some more, having launched an extraordinary rant at the Stamford Bridge hierarchy while away on international duty with Spain.

Criticizing the club’s transfer policy of signing younger players, Cucurella told The Athletic: “I understand this is part of the club’s policy, and that they want to take this direction — signing young players and looking to the future.

“But, for all of us who are still here and want to win big things, moments like this make you feel discouraged.

“We have a good core of players. The foundations are there. But to fight for major trophies such as the Premier League or the Champions League, you need more. Signing young players only might complicate achieving those goals. Against PSG, we lacked players that had gone through situations like that.

“You need time as well, and I know the young players are the ones that will have the experience in the future. But you need to find the balance between both worlds.”

Cucurella went on to defend Rosenior, describing him as a “very good person”, but hit out at Chelsea’s decision to fire Enzo Maresca in the first place.

“The moment Maresca left, it had a big impact on us," Cucurella said. "These are decisions taken by the club. If you asked me, I would not have made this decision. To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season. You would give everyone, the players and the new manager, time to get ready, have a full pre-season…

“The instability around the club comes from this, in a nutshell. We had a caretaker (former under-21s coach Calum McFarlane) first, then a new manager, with new ideas and no time to work on them. It is what it is.”

Cucurella also went on to suggest he would be open to leaving Chelsea, having been asked what he would do if Barcelona came calling.

"It would be difficult to refuse,” he responded. “It's not just about me. I'd have to think about my family. If it happens, it happens, and we'll see what decision is made."

Liverpool.com says: All does not seem well at Chelsea. Even with Liverpool as bad as it is right now, it feels as though the Reds might still end up getting that final Champions League spot just by Chelsea being even worse. It would be a hollow victory, but we'd take it right now...
