Inter president Beppe Marotta believes that the performance in Sunday night’s derby was more than enough to earn a result against AC Milan.
Milan’s win at San Siro four days ago – looking purely at the main stats from the game – appears about as smash-and-grab as they come. Inter had more shots, more shots on target, a much higher possession percentage and a higher Expected Goals number.
However, what matters the most is putting the ball in the back of the net, which the Rossoneri did once and their hosts failed to. Mike Maignan is also part of the reason for this, as he made three stunning saves including one to keep out Hakan Calhanoglu’s penalty.
‘More than adequate’
The likes of Cristian Chivu, Lautaro Martinez and Alessandro Bastoni have already spoken about the notion of ‘deserving more’ from the derby. Now, Beppe Marotta has shared his thoughts in an interview with Sky, before their defeat to Atletico Madrid.
“Over the last two months, we’ve had a good run in performances, but not in results. Even in the derby, credit to Milan for winning on Sunday and honour to the winners, but the performance was more than adequate,” he said (via Calciomercato.com).

On San Siro versus the Metropolitana, he answered: “San Siro always has its charm and its history. This is an opportunity to see a modern stadium that represents high standards of safety, vision, and experience.
“The need for a new stadium in Milan was essential: it will be a long journey, but we cannot forget what San Siro has given us over the decades. However, the need for a new stadium is an absolute priority.”
